First Pilates Class?
Your first Pilates session is exciting. You’re going to love it! At the same time, you can feel a little anxious before going. It’s new and you don’t know what to expect. Let me share some tips on how to prepare for your first session.
Know studio rules before you go
A good studio will let you know their policies. You should have access to these answers before you go:
What is your cancellation policy?
Do I have to wear grip socks during the class?
Do I have to wear a mask the whole time? (Differs by state & county)
Is the class I’m attending beginner?
Arrive 10 minutes early
I’m usually a punctual person but especially if it’s my first time to a workout class. The extra time will allow you to settle into your new environment and ask questions of others. This is also a great time to meet the instructor which leads me to my next tip….
Introduce yourself & your injuries to your instructor
Give a quick hello to the instructor and let him/her/they know that this is your first time taking their class. Great time to also make them aware of any injuries that you need to be careful of when working out.
What kind of injuries?
Injuries that have needed surgery, physical therapy, or cause you pain. Common injuries include shoulders, knees, hips, and lower back. They don’t need to know your whole medical history, just the body parts that you may need modifications on.
Where relaxed clothing with full coverage
Some Pilates exercises can feel awkward. Today is not the day to wear those pants that you can kind of see your underwear in. I recommend yoga pants and a loose fitted shirt. No need to buy anything special (unless you want an excuse to), just wear what you have that is comfy.
Lastly, relax! You don’t need experience
Pilates is meant to enrich your life, not torment it. Relax your mind and know you are going in for the experience. You are in competition with no one, not even yourself. If you can’t do an exercise just wait until you can pick up on the next one.
